Introduction Of Ramses
ESA has begun preparing for Ramses, the Rapid Apophis Mission for Space Safety. Ramses' mission is to analyze asteroid 99942 Apophis when it approaches Earth in 2029. Apophis, which is around 375 meters big, will pass within 32,000 kilometers of Earth on April 13, 2029, allowing billions of people to observe it. This event is extremely unusual, occurring just approximately once per 5,000 to 10,000 years. It will not pose a crash threat for at least 100 years.
The Scientific Goals Of The Ramses Mission
During the flyby, the Ramses spacecraft will observe how Earth's gravity influences Apophis. This includes investigating how the asteroid's shape, rotation, and surface characteristics change over time. This will allow us to learn more about these characteristics, which will be useful for future defensive preparations. NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission will also target Apophis, allowing experts to determine what changes occurred following the approach. This two-pronged strategy allows us to thoroughly compare the asteroid's status before and after. Ramses is an excellent example of how to quickly dispatch reconnaissance flights to keep an eye on potentially harmful asteroids. Accurate data will assist in developing strategies for deflecting asteroids and avoiding collisions.
