The Indian team that competed at the 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2024 produced outstanding results, with one student getting a GOLD medal and three students receiving SILVER medals.
About The 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO), 2024
The 35th IBO was held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from July 7 to 13, 2024. The team was directed by two eminent experts, Professor Sasikumar Menon of TDM Lab in Mumbai and Dr. Mayuri Rege of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) at TIFR, as well as two Scientific Observers, Dr. Rajesh Patkar of IIT Bombay and Dr. Devesh Suthar of M. S. University in Baroda.
305 Students From 80 Countries
This year's IBO attracted 305 students from 80 nations. In total, 29 gold medals were awarded. The competition consisted of four 1.5-hour experimental examinations and two 3.25-hour theory examinations. The experiments covered a wide range of issues, including animal anatomy and physiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics. Highlights of these exams included sheep eyeball dissections, plasmid purification, protein quantification, and rigorous pH titration with methodologies such as PCA and sequence analysis.
Appreciation For Training
Theory examinations posed difficult questions based on cutting-edge research in fields such as plant biology, cell biology, ethology, and biosystematics. Teachers and mentors from across the country, as well as the HBCSE Biology Olympiad cell, deserve recognition for their efforts in preparing students during orientation and pre-departure camps.
Nodal Center Of The Country
The National Steering Committee, all teacher organisations, and the Government of India's financing agencies deserve special recognition for their ongoing strong support for the Olympiad programme. India has a large national Olympiad programme in basic sciences and mathematics that connects to international Olympiads. The HBCSE serves as the country's nodal centre for this programme.
Program Objectives
The program seeks to foster excellence in science and mathematics among pre-university students. The Olympiad schedule in Astronomy (junior and senior levels), Biology, Chemistry, Junior Science, and Physics consists of five stages, one for each topic.
First Stage For Each Subject
The Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) organizes the initial stage of each subject in partnership with teacher associations from other subjects. The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) organizes the final levels of Astronomy (senior level), Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The National Centre for Science Museums (NCSM) handles the remaining phases of Astronomy (junior level). IAPT handles all stages of the Junior Science Olympiad.
Vedant Sakre (GOLD) from Mumbai, Maharashtra
Ishan Pednekar (SILVER) from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra
Shrijith Sivakumar (SILVER) from Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Yashashwi Kumar (SILVER) from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh
