The Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced an ambitious endeavor to enhance the landscape of Indian language literature in higher education. This revolutionary program, known as ASMITA (Augmenting Study Materials in Indian Languages via Translation and Academic Writing), aims to produce an amazing 22,000 publications in Indian languages over the next five years.
The ASMITA Project Aims To Bridge Language Gaps In Higher Education
ASMITA is a collaboration between the UGC and the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, a powerful committee under the Ministry of Education. The project's principal goal is to promote Indian languages in education, meeting the long-standing demand for high-quality academic resources in regional languages.

Implementation Strategy
- Nodal Universities And Regional Collaboration
To ensure successful implementation, thirteen nodal universities have been chosen to lead the project. These institutions will collaborate with member universities from different regions to create and translate content.
Standardized Operating Procedure
The UGC has developed a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to guide the book-writing process in each assigned language. This SOP encompasses several key stages-
Identification of nodal officers and authors
Allocation of titles, subjects, and programs
Writing and editing processes
Manuscript submission
Review and plagiarism checks
Finalization and design
Proofreading
E-publication

Complementary Initiatives
- Bahubhasha Shabdakosh
Along with ASMITA, the ministry launched the "Bahubhasha Shabdakosh," a comprehensive multilingual dictionary that serves as a single point of reference for all Indian languages' words and meanings. The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) will create this program in partnership with the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti.
The Shabdakosh project intends to make it easier to employ Indian words, phrases, and sentences in modern fields such as information technology, industry, research, and education.
Real-Time Translation Architecture
