Description
The West Bengal government restored senior IPS officer Rajeev Kumar as West Bengal's Director General of Police (DGP) on July 15. Mr. Kumar will succeed Sanjoy Mukherjee, who was named the State's DGP on the orders of the Election Commission of India during the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.
Additional Chief Secretary
Mr. Kumar will remain in his current position as Additional Chief Secretary in the Department of Information Technology and Electronics. Mr. Mukherjee has been named the new Director General of the State's Fire and Emergency Services. In the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections on March 18, Vivek Sahay was appointed DGP of State Police, succeeding Mr. Kumar. However, within a day, Mr. Mukherjee was named DGP.
About Rajiv Kumar
Rajeev Kumar PPM IPS (born July 30, 1966) is an Indian police officer and official who has served as Director General of West Bengal Police (additional charge) from July 2024. Previously, he held the same position from December 2023 till being ousted by the Election Commission of India in March 2024. Prior to his current position, he has served as the West Bengal Government's additional chief secretary for information technology since 2023.

Mr. Kumar is considered close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and has held various critical positions, including Commissioner of Kolkata Police. Ms. Banerjee staged a dharna in Kolkata in February 2019 when a team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) searched Mr. Kumar's home while he was the Commissioner. The Central Agency conducted searches in connection with the Saradha Chit fund fraud in West Bengal.
