Description
Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik received the Golden Sand Master medal at an international championship in Russia on July 12. The International Sand Sculpture Championship took place from July 4 to 12 at St Petersburg's renowned Peter and Paul Fortress. The event brought together the world's 21 master sculptors.
About Sudarsan Pattnaik
Sudarsan Pattnaik (born April 15, 1977) is an Indian sand artist from Puri, Odisha. For his seaside sand artworks, he received the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, from the government in 2014.
His Achievements And Awards
In 2014, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to Sand Arts.
People's Choice Award at the 2014 Sand Sculpting World Cup in Atlantic City, United States.
The first Indian to win the Italian Sand Art Award in 2019, at the International Scorrano Sand Nativity event held in Lecce, Italy, from November 13 to 17.
His Creation
Pattnaik created a 12-foot sculpture of a chariot and Lord Jagannath with his devotee Balaram Das, a prominent 14th-century Odia poet.

Story Behind The Inspiration
It is reported that once during the 'Rath Yatra', he tried to ascend Lord Jagannath's chariot to offer prayers. When rejected, Das went to a beach, carved Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra in the golden sand, and began worshipping. His devotion was so deep that the deities departed from the chariot and appeared where Das was praying," he explained. Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Moscow congratulated Pattnaik on his achievement.

Pattnaik, a Padma Shri recipient, has competed in over 65 international sand art championships and festivals around the world, earning accolades for his country. His sand art aims to convey various social messages.
