The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) announced on July 12 that it will invest up to Rs 5 crore in chosen sports companies over five years. During a two-day sports tech startups summit in New Delhi, the institute released that they intend to fund at least 200 sports tech businesses over the next five years. IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies will grant cash to the selected firms.
During the conclave, Professor V Kamakoti, Director, of IIT Madras said, “With the ever-increasing intervention of technology in sports, the Institute is committed to bringing sports and technology together. We believe that the market for sports technology will be significant and hence comes a necessity to develop indigenous products for Indian sportspersons, right from monitoring their health to progress in their respective sports.”
New Four-Year Course In Sports Science
In addition, IIT Madras will offer a four-year sports science course beginning in the 2025 academic year. The course is part of IIT Madras' Centre of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA), which intends to support deep tech start-ups in the sports industry.
Speaking with indianexpress.com, professor Mahesh Panchagula who is the head of CESSA, said that they are still working on course modalities such as eligibility, course structure among others. “What we have already started is with four to eight weeks courses on topics like sports psychology, exercise physiology, strengthening conditioning, food nutrition among other courses. These courses are open to anyone. Students will be able to learn from the best people,” said Mahesh Panchagula. The Madras-based institute will also offer sports management courses.
The IIT Madras Centre has achieved progress in sports like as boxing, judo, wrestling, game and training analysis, and sensor boards for tennis and badminton. ESPN is already employing IIT Madras' smart technology to gain a better understanding of the game and boost audience engagement.
The institute also intends to support Indian government initiatives and various sporting entities' efforts to host the Olympics in 2036. Experts hope to assist the program in such a way that Indian athletes win at least 50 medals at the tournament.
IIT Madras is also partnering with the National Centre for Sports Sciences and Research (NCSSR) to address difficulties in fields like as AI, data analysis, and archery. Along with it, the institute established EduSwasth, a technology-driven project in Indian school physical education.
