A team of researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered a new species of forest-dwelling horned frog in Arunachal Pradesh. The new species, Xenophrys apatani, was discovered in the Talle Wildlife Sanctuary in the Lower Subansiri district and named after the prominent Apatani people in acknowledgment of their efforts to conserve wild flora and fauna.

The new frog species is named after the Apatani tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, which primarily lives in the Lower Subansiri Valley of Arunachal Pradesh, where Tale Wildlife Sanctuary is located, in honor of their contributions to the conservation of natural flora and animals," Saikia said. The researchers also gave information on the biogeographic distribution of Xenophrys species in India, which are found along the Eastern Himalayas and Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspots. The findings are anticipated to inform future conservation efforts and improve our understanding of amphibian evolution in the region.
