NASA has obtained an incredible view of our solar system's largest volcano, Olympus Mons, using the Mars Odyssey orbiter.
About Mars Odyssey
It was a preliminary mission in NASA's Mars Exploration Program.
It was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on April 7, 2001.
The Odyssey spacecraft has orbited Mars since 2001.
Odyssey's original objectives were to look for traces of water, create precise maps of the planet's surface materials, and assess radiation levels for humans.
The spacecraft currently holds the record for the longest continuously operational mission in orbit around a planet other than Earth. The mission is set to last until 2025.
It provided the first worldwide map of the chemical components and minerals that comprise the Martian surface.
Odyssey continues to investigate Mars' surface to see how the planet changes over time.
The spacecraft also acts as a communications relay to Earth for spacecraft on the ground that lack high-powered antennae and are unable to transmit data to Earth swiftly.
Key Facts About Olympus Mons
It is a shield volcano situated in Mars' western hemisphere.
It is Mars' highest point and the greatest volcano in the solar system.
It stands 16 miles (24 kilometers) tall, making it roughly three times the height of Mount Everest.
It is also extraordinarily wide (340 miles or 550 kilometers), covering an area larger than the entire chain of Hawaiian islands.
The largest volcano on Earth, Mauna Loa in Hawaii, is 120 kilometers broad and 9 kilometers high.
The volcano is around 3.5 billion years old, indicating that it formed early in Mars' history.
It is a very flat mountain, with a slope of only 2 to 5 degrees.
Its peak is defined by a caldera, a massive depression created by volcanic activity that is 50 miles (80 kilometers) wide.
The summit caldera is made up of many overlapping pits. These pits were formed throughout many eruptive episodes.
In contrast, most Earth-based volcanoes have a single, less complex caldera.
