The Central Railway has erected a floating solar plant with a capacity of 10 MWp in the Igatpuri lake in the Western Ghats, marking the Indian Railways' first such endeavor. Central Railway has long been an ardent supporter of clean and renewable energy for its traction needs, taking a number of bold and novel methods to achieve this goal.
Harnessing Solar And Wind Power
Moving toward its ultimate objective of zero carbon emissions by 2030, Central Railway has commissioned 12.05 MWp solar plants on the rooftops of railway stations and buildings, with 4 MWp solar plants installed last year. MWP stands for Mega Watt Peak, which is a measure of the maximum potential production of power. This has resulted in a savings of Rs.4.62 crores in 2023-24 and a reduction in carbon footprints of 6594.81 MT. There are additional plans to install 7 MWp solar plants this year.
Moving Toward Renewable Energy
Steps have also been initiated to transition to renewable energy. At present, 56.4 MW of wind energy and 61 MW of solar energy are being used. Furthermore, PPAs have been inked for the usage of 325 MW of solar and wind energy on a 'round-the-clock' basis. In addition, 180 MW of solar and 50 MW of wind power are expected to be generated this fiscal year. These actions are equivalent to saving 2,50,000 trees, implying that the benefits delivered by these interventions are similar to those supplied by 2,50,000 trees.
The First Floating Solar Plant On The Indian Railways
Another unique endeavor being attempted by Central Railway is the development of a 10 MWp floating solar plant in Igatpuri Lake, which will be the first of its kind on the Indian Railways network.
Benefits
Central Railway's current monthly power usage is 236.92 million units for traction work and 9.7 million units for non-traction activity. After the above renewable energy sources are operational, 70% of traction energy is predicted to be green.
Recognition
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has introduced a labeling program called Shunya for Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) and Shunya Plus for Net Positive Energy Buildings (NPEB) in an effort to encourage building owners and promoters to create energy-efficient buildings and make further improvements to make them net zero or net positive energy.
Goal
Considering Central Railway's serious efforts toward environmental conservation, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency has given Shunya Plus labels to five buildings and Shunya labels to two Central Railway buildings as of today. Central Railway maintains committed to harnessing renewable energy sources, employing solar electricity, installing wind energy resources, offering suitable passenger comforts, and making a substantial contribution to Indian Railway's objective of Green Earth.
