Description
The Medium Range-Microwave Obscurant Chaff Rocket (MR-MOCR) was handed over to the Indian Navy by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) during a ceremony in New Delhi. This rocket forms a microwave obscurant cloud in orbit, providing an efficient screen against radio frequency searchers.
Technology & Development
Microwave Obscurant Chaff (MOC)- Developed by the DRDO's Defence Laboratory in Jodhpur, this device obscures radar signals by forming a microwave shield around platforms and assets to limit radar detection.
Special Fibres- The chaff rocket is made up of fibres with a diameter of a few microns that have unique microwave obscuration capabilities. When shot, these fibers create a permanent microwave obscurant cloud in space.
Trials And Effectiveness
Phase I Trials- Conducted aboard Indian Navy ships to demonstrate the MOC cloud's persistence in space.
Phase-II trials- It revealed a 90% reduction in Radar Cross-Section (RCS) of an aerial target, and the Indian Navy approved the results.
Handover And Acknowledgements
DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat handed over the MR-MOCR units, which met all qualification conditions, to Rear Admiral Brijesh Vashistha, Director General of Naval Armament Inspection.
Both dignitaries congratulated the Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur team for their tremendous accomplishments and rapid development of this important technology.
