Description

The Kerala Assembly passed a motion urging the Indian Central Government to alter the state's name under the Constitution from "Kerala" to "Keralam" on June 24. This was the second time in a year that the resolution was unanimously approved. This idea, backed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, aims to make the constitutional name reflect the word "Keralam" in Malayalam.

Resolution Details And The Legislative Process

There are distinctions between the Malayalam name "Keralam" and the English word "Kerala" used in the Constitution's first Schedule, as raised by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the Kerala Assembly. Article 3 of the Constitution is used to petition for a change in the move. The identical resolution from last year had to be revisited and revised since it did not include enough proposals for revisions to the Eighth Schedule, which deals with official languages.

Etymology Of 'Kerala'

The name "Kerala" has both historical and linguistic implications. Emperor Ashoka used it in writing for the first time in 257 BCE, naming it "Keralaputra." Dr. Herman Gundert, a German scholar, ties the name to "Keram," which refers to the area between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The term "cher" in this name derives from the Old Tamil language and meaning "to join."

Formation Of Kerala State

In the 1920s, the Madras Presidency merged Travancore, Cochin, and Malabar to form a unified Malayalam-speaking state. Following India's independence, on November 1, 1956, the State Reorganisation Commission, chaired by Syed Fazl Ali, proposed that Kerala be created based on linguistic unity, which meant that more Malayalam-speaking districts were added while certain Tamil-speaking areas were excluded. The purpose of altering the state's name to "Keralam" is to better reflect its language, culture, and history while remaining within the confines of the country's laws.
