Paul Thomas, MD and CEO of ESAF Small financing Bank, has been chosen Chairperson of the board of Sa-Dhan, a network of microfinance and impact financing organizations. So far, Thomas served as the Association's co-chair.
About Paul Thomas
K. Paul Thomas is the founder of the ESAF Group of Social Enterprises, which includes ESAF Microfinance and Investments Pvt Limited. He has over 32 years of management experience, including more than 25 years in the microfinance business. Before launching the microfinance program, Mr. Paul Thomas worked for Indian Farmers Fertilizers Co-operative Ltd (IFFCO), the world's largest cooperative-owned fertilizer company, for 18 years, traveling widely throughout rural India. During these trips, he realized that by generating possibilities, he could help improve communities. This motivated him to establish microfinance lending through the ESAF association. He served on the boards of major microfinance organizations such as MFIN and is the founder and President of the Kerala Association of Microfinance Institutional Entrepreneurs (KAMFI).
About ESAF Small Finance Bank
ESAF Small Finance Bank (ESAF SFB), a new era social bank, continues to revolutionize the banking experience for all stakeholders. We primarily focus on expanding the banking horizon to new unbanked/underbanked areas, but we also operate as a bank for everybody, having branches in urban, semi-urban, rural, and rural unbanked areas. ESAF began its work as an NGO in 1992, with a bigger aim of sustainable and holistic transformation of the impoverished and disenfranchised.
Success Of Grameen Bank In Bangladesh
The success of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh confirmed the idea of ESAF's founder, Shri. K. Paul Thomas. In 1995, he introduced Micro Enterprises growth (MED) services, which resulted in the establishment of ESAF Microfinance and Investments Pvt. Ltd. in 2008, emphasizing the necessity of financial inclusion in the overall economic growth of the poor and disenfranchised. ESAF Microfinance and Investments Pvt. Ltd. was a pioneer in establishing a formal and structured form of lending by forming mutually trusted groups at the village level, which not only provided financial sustainability but also reinforced the fact that 'the poor of our country are trustworthy'.
About Sa-Dhan
Sa-Dhan is a network of microfinance and impact finance institutions. It is an RBI-designated Self-Regulatory Organisation (SRO) for Microfinance Institutions. Sa-Dhan is India's first and largest association of community development finance institutions, founded more than two decades ago to support and enhance the mission of developing Inclusive Impact Finance in India. It aims to improve understanding of the microfinance sector among policymakers, funders, banks, governments, scholars, and practitioners.
Members Work In The States
Sa-Dhan has over 220 members working in 33 states/UTs and over 600 districts, including both for-profit and non-profit MFIs, SHG promoting organizations, banks, rating agencies, capacity-building institutions, and so on. Sa-Dhan has 44 million clients and a loan outstanding of over Rupees1,27,801 crores. Its members operate under various legal forms and models. Sa-Dhan is also designated as a National Support Organization (NSO) by the National Rural Livelihood Mission.
