Description

Srinagar, the largest city in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, was recently recognized a 'World Craft City' by the World Crafts Council. The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, announced this accolade on social media.

Significance Of The Award

The fact that Srinagar is known as a "World Craft City" demonstrates how competent and dedicated the workers there are. Their ancient artistry and talents have not only enriched their culture, but they are also highly regarded around the world. The purpose of this award is to recognize and safeguard the diverse range of crafts that are unique to Kashmir.

Impact On The Local Community And Economy

Being dubbed a "World Craft World" is expected to have a significant impact on Srinagar's business. It is predicted that the prize will attract more tourists, benefiting local businesses and the sale of traditional items. This distinction is also viewed as an inspiration for the local youth, encouraging them to learn and practice traditional crafts. Srinagar considers its designation as a "World Craft City" by the World Crafts Council to be a watershed moment in its history. It not only celebrates the area's excellent crafters, but it also promotes Srinagar as a destination for beautiful goods. This recognition appears to promote both cultural understanding and corporate success in the area.

About The World Crafts Council

Aileen Osborn Webb founded the non-profit World Crafts Council (WCC) in 1964 to promote and encourage craftsmanship around the world. It was established following discussions amongst international craft representatives in New York City, which led to its membership in UNESCO. The WCC is organized into five regions: Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and North America. Its main office is in Belgium. Amazingly, the WCC has designated more than 40 locations throughout the world as "Cities of Crafts." It changed its name to World Crafts Council International in 2020 due to new regulations.
