West Bengal's Education Minister, Bratya Basu, announced on Wednesday a centralized admission process for undergraduate courses at all state-run colleges. The admissions process, which would take place through a single website, will begin on June 24, he said.
This would eliminate the prospect of one student with outstanding grades enrolling in numerous universities at the same time and then holding his seat in the preferred course while vacating the others, Basu explained, adding that as a result, many seats remain vacant each year.
In the centralised approach, one candidate will be offered only one seat at a time, based on his results, with the possibility of a better opportunity if a vacancy arises elsewhere, he explained.
The minister stated that any student from throughout the country who has passed the class 12 final exams can apply for up to 25 undergraduate courses through the website. He explained that the merit list will be generated by the system.
Presidency University, Jadavpur University, and a few autonomous and minority colleges have been spared from the scheme, he said.
“We are launching the portal to provide students with an opportunity to choose their desired courses in chosen colleges via a single window system,” Basu said.
He stated that the process of filling teacher-in-charge positions that are now empty in numerous colleges has begun.
At the press conference, Basu was also asked about Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswas Sarma's letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urging her to hand over the inquiry into the death of IIT Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed to the CBI.
