The Northern Command of the Indian Army has ordered 550 indigenously designed, developed, and built ASMI submachine guns from Hyderabad-based Lokesh Machine Limited for Rs 4.26 crores, marking a significant step toward self-reliance. This is the first time an indigenously developed and manufactured weapon has been integrated into the Indian army.

Design- Created by the Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO) Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune in conjunction with the Indian Army.
Manufacturer- Lokesh Machine Limited, a CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) machine manufacturer, makes the ASMI in its Toorpan factory in Telangana's Medak district from aerospace-grade aluminum.

Weighs under 2.4 kg, making it 10-15% lighter than international competitors like the Uzi and Heckler & Koch’s MP5
Magazine capacity of 32 rounds
Firing rate of 800 rounds per minute
Selection Over Global Competitors
The Indian Army chose the ASMI submachine gun over known foreign weaponry such as Israel Weapon Industries' (IWI) Uzi and German manufacturer Heckler & Koch's MP5.
Potential Buyers And Boost For Atmanirbhar Bharat
After successfully delivering the submachine gun to the Indian Army, Lokesh Machine Limited has sent weapons to the National Security Guards (NSG), Assam Rifles, and Border Security Force (BSF) for testing. If these forces accept the ASMI, it will significantly benefit the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) campaign and the indigenization of the armed forces' weapon systems.
