Description

Thailand will become the first Southeast Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage after the kingdom's Senate passed a marriage equality measure on June 18, with proponents hailing it as a "monumental step forward for LGBTQ+ rights."

First Nations In Southeast Asia

Following a final reading, the Senate easily approved the bill, with 130 senators voting yes. Only four MPs opposed the bill. The bill still needs the king's approval before marriage equality can become a reality in Thailand, but this is considered a formality. The law will thereafter take effect 120 days after it is published in the Royal Gazette. Thailand will now be the third country in Asia to allow same-sex marriage, following Taiwan in 2019 and Nepal in 2023.

Marriage Equality Bill Submitted To Parliament

Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, of the Pheu Thai Party, has likewise committed to bring the marriage equality law to parliament. Srettha joined Pride Month events in Bangkok earlier in June, dressed in a rainbow shirt and participating in a big march through the capital's streets. "It is a fundamental right to choose who you love," he wrote in a post on June 1. Srettha has been eager to promote Thailand as a welcoming place for LGBTQ+ individuals, including backing a bid to host World Pride in 2030.

Regarding The Measure

The measure is a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ rights in Thailand, according to Panyaphon Phiphatkhunarnon, the founder of the Love Foundation, an NGO that advocates for LGBTQ+ equality in Thailand. "The potential impact of this bill is enormous. It would not only improve the lives of numerous couples, but would also help to create a more just and equal society for all.

Inspiration For The Younger Generation

The bill gives LGBTQ+ couples the same legal rights and recognition as heterosexual couples, including inheritance, adoption, and healthcare decision-making. Aside from the legal ramifications, the approval of this law would send a strong message of acceptance and inclusion. This will encourage young people to live truly, while also promoting Thailand as a modern and inclusive country, attracting tourists and enterprises. This will promote a cultural shift in which LGBTQ+ people feel welcomed and supported.

The Opinions Of Bangkok Locals

Bangkok residents Pokpong Jitjaiyai and Watit Benjamonkolchai say they intend to marry as soon as the law is passed. When I was younger, many thought that people like me couldn't have a family or children, thus marriage was impossible. "Over ten years ago, we couldn't live together like we do now. Our current situation prevents us from being our authentic selves. And now I can easily admit that I am gay." Pokpong expressed his hope that the marriage equality bill will spark a "domino effect" in other countries. "I want the people of the globe to see what love is. "Love is love," he stated.

Supported By Everyone

The marriage equality bill was approved by all major parties and is a key step in cementing the country's status as one of the friendliest in the area to gay, lesbian, and transgender persons. Previous efforts to implement marital equality over the last decade had failed. In 2020, the Constitutional Court determined that Thailand's present law, which requires marriage between a man and a woman, was constitutional. Some of the major political parties running in last year's election, including the progressive Move Forward Party, promised to promote marriage equality as part of their campaigns. However, despite having a large youth following, the party was unable to form a government as erstwhile adversaries banded together to keep it out of office. The future of the party and its popular former leader Pita Limjaroenrat is uncertain, as they face a flurry of indictments.

Looking Forward

We've come a long way towards social equality. I'd like to reiterate my government's commitment to pushing for the passage of the Equal Marriage Bill, which we can now see as the light at the end of the tunnel," Srettha added. We look forward to hosting of the World Pride in 2030 in Thailand.
