The Indian Army announced on June 18 the launch of a cutting-edge skin bank facility at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral). The facility provides the most advanced treatment for serious burn injuries sustained by military members and their families.
Three Types Of Patients
This will be the first of its kind within the Armed Forces Medical Services, catering to the three types of patients seen in Army hospitals: injuries from domestic fire accidents, electrical incidents, and kerosene warmers used by jawans and officers to stay warm at high altitudes. Private skin banks have been around for a long time in various sections of the country. The military, on the other hand, has difficulty obtaining skin from them when recipients require it. "The new skin bank will act as a centralized hub for the collecting, processing, storage, and distribution of skin grafts, making it a valuable resource for military medical centers around the country. By establishing this facility, the Armed Forces ensure that their people and families have access to the most advanced skin replacement techniques. The skin bank will be supervised by highly qualified medical specialists such as plastic surgeons, tissue engineers, and specialised technicians. The Ministry of Defence indicated that the facility will follow the highest quality control and safety requirements to ensure the skin grafts' integrity and reliability.
Quality Care
Lt. General Arindam Chatterjee, DGMS(Army) and Colonel Commandant, described the establishment of the skin bank as a tribute to the Army's ongoing commitment to the health and well-being of its members, as it will improve the quality of care. "By having a dedicated resource for skin tissue, we can provide our patients with the most effective and personalised treatments, ultimately improving their chances of recovery and rehabilitation," said Lt Gen Ajith Nilakantan, Commandant of Army Hospital.
Skin Bank
The skin bank now completes the Army's organ donation plan, which aims to save the lives of its soldiers and their families. The Army Hospital (R&R) already has a set of skin given on May 29th in its bank. A doctor explained that only a few millimetres of the top layer, not the entire skin, are scalped using an instrument known as 'electrical dermatomes'. To protect the sensitivities of family members of organ donors, Army medics remove skin only from the lower limbs and back, leaving hands and other body parts intact. The skin is then soaked in an 85% glycerol solution and stored at a specific temperature in a refrigerator until it is ready for grafting or transplantation, according to Army hospital sources.
Increased Awareness Of Skin Donation
The Army feels that increasing awareness of skin donation in the country is necessary to close the demand and supply gap. People are eager to donate organs but not skin due to concerns that it may mutilate the body, according to hospital sources. The method takes three to four weeks since the skin must pass various tests to determine, among other things, whether it is culture and fungal-negative. Any skin can be used on anyone, and surgeons can tell whether or not the patient accepts it within two to three weeks of the transplant or grafting, according to the doctors.
