The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded a unique contract worth approximately Rs 50,000 crore to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a well-known Indian state-owned aerospace and military business. This is the largest single order for helicopters ever given to an Indian business. The funds will be utilized to purchase Light Combat Helicopters (LCHs), often known as "Prachand."
Procurement And Contract Details
This procurement, which was handled under the Single Vendor Contract (SVC) procedure, will only go to HAL. The corporation will now present a techno-commercial bid, which will be discussed with the defense minister until it is agreed upon.
Specifications For The LCH
During test flights in Ladakh, the Prachand helicopters, which were built to perform well in Indian terrain, demonstrated their ability to tolerate high altitude. These choppers' ability to fly at high altitudes and carry advanced battle armaments makes them valuable in a variety of situations. Some of these are combat search and rescue (CSAR), destruction of enemy air defense (DEAD), and counter-insurgency (CI). It will also take action against slow-moving planes and remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs), assisting in all types of weather and terrain.
Strategic Importance And Future Impact
The LCH is designed to be India's primary combat helicopter for the next 30 to 40 years. It improves the Indian military's tactical capabilities while reducing dependency on combat helicopters from other countries. With an initial local content value of more than 55% and space for expansion, the helicopter might be exported in the future.
Previous Developments And Their Economic Implications
Before this large contract, in 2022, the government issued HAL an order for 15 LCH units costing Rs 3,887 crore, which included funds for infrastructure development. This measure demonstrates that India is increasingly keen to upgrade its defense infrastructure and aerospace capabilities.
