The fabled city of Joshimath, Uttarakhand, has been formally renamed Jyotirmath. The state administration announced the decision after receiving approval from the centre. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami fulfilled a promise made a year ago when he announced that Joshimath tehsil in Chamoli district would be renamed Jyotirmath.
The Story Of Adi Shankaracharya And Jyotirmath
Jyotirmath (also known as Jyotir Peeth) is one of the four cardinal mathas (monasteries) that 8th-century scholar Adi Shankaracharya is said to have founded throughout India to spread the Advaita Vedanta philosophy. The Jyotirmath was designed to preserve and disseminate spiritual knowledge and practices. It is said that when Adi Shankaracharya or Adiguru visited here, he underwent penance under the Amar Kalpavriksha tree. The name "Jyotirmath" is derived from the divine light of knowledge which he is claimed to have attained, with 'jyoti' meaning divine light.
From Jyotirmath To Joshimath
Jyotirmath was the hill town's original name. Over time, the locals began to refer to the place as "Joshimath". This transition was most likely gradual and organic, influenced by regional languages, local dialects, and ease of pronunciation. The transition reflects language and cultural change rather than a unique historical event. The term originated before British colonial rule. As a result, this name was officially registered with the government. Later, when the tehsil and block were founded, they were also called Joshimath. While "Jyotirmath" was used in a more formal or religious setting, "Joshimath" became the more widely used name.
Proposal From Locals
The name change was first requested by local citizens and many organizations at a ceremony last year at Ghat in Chamoli district, where the decision to alter the historic name of Jyotirmath was made official. Locals in the fabled city of Joshimath, gateway to the Badrinath shrine, had long demanded that Joshimath be renamed Jyotirmath following the natural calamity land submergence in early 2023.
