Former IAS official P K Mishra has been re-appointed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Principal Secretary. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Dr. P.K. Mishra, IAS (Retired), as Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, effective June 10, 2024. His appointment will last until the Prime Minister's tenure ends or until additional directives are issued, whichever comes first.
Principal Secretary position
The position of principal secretary exists in both the state and national governments of India. The position holder is typically a senior Indian Administrative Service officer or another senior public servant. Principal secretaries are typically the administrative leaders of departments within state government. They can also be appointed to the central government as Joint Secretaries. The job of Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India was formed during Indira Gandhi's tenure as Prime Minister. The Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister is in charge of the Prime Minister's Office. He/she is the Cabinet Secretary to the Government of India. Furthermore, some prime ministers appoint an additional principal secretary, who has the position and authority of Cabinet Secretary to the Government of India.
About P. K. Mishra
Pramod Kumar Mishra, also known as P. K. Mishra, was born on August 11, 1948. In 1972, he earned a first-class M.A. in economics from the Delhi School of Economics. In 1990, he earned an M.A. in Development Economics from the University of Sussex, followed by a Ph.D. in Economics/Development Studies. He is the 13th and current principal secretary to India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is a 1972 batch Indian Administrative Service officer from the Gujarat cadre. Mishra also served as Narendra Modi's principal secretary from 2001 to 2004, when the latter was Gujarat's Chief Minister.
