Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi will take over as the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS) on June 30. During his 39-year career, he also served several positions, including Northern Army Commander and Director General (DG) infantry.
About Lt General Upendra Diwedi
Lieutenant General Upendra Diwedi was born in 1964. Lt General Upendra Dwivedi attended the Sainik School Rewa, the National Defence College, and the United States Army War College. He also attended the DSSC Wellington and the Army War College in Mhow. He was named a 'Distinguished Fellow' in the prestigious NDC comparable course at the United States Army War College in Carlisle. He completed the Master of Philosophy in Defence and Management Studies as well as two Master's degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science. He has also been honored with three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards.
On December 15, 1984, he was commissioned into the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, the Indian Army's infantry corps. Throughout his 40 years of service, he has held a number of positions. His command positions include Regiment (18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles), Brigade (26 Sector Assam Rifles), DIG Assam Rifles (East), and 9 Corps.
Achievement
In his nearly 39 years of military service, Lt General Dwivedi led his army in both the Kashmir valley and the Rajasthan region. He has served as the Sector Commander and Inspector General (IG) of the Assam Rifles in the country's northeast.
Lt Gen Dwivedi was also the deputy chief of Army Headquarters and the commander of Himachal Pradesh's 9th Corps. Lt Gen Dwivedi will now become the 30th Army Chief after serving as Vice Chief of Army Staff, Northern Army Commander (from 2022 to 2024), DG Infantry, and in a variety of other leadership positions within the military.
