Description
ISRO has unveiled TRISHNA, a collaborative Indo-French infrared earth observation satellite program to monitor surface temperature and water management around the world.
About The Project
The research, which comes at a time when both India and Europe are experiencing high heat, will offer data points for climatic impacts on the planet via evapotranspiration monitoring, which measures water evaporation from land as well as release from plants.
The mission will investigate the availability and concentrations of water in various sections of the biosphere, as well as dynamics such as melting glaciers, in order to calculate how much water is consumed on land. ISRO stated that the satellite will monitor thermal anomalies and spikes, land-based heat emissions, surface energy, urban heat islands, and other global parameters.
The satellite will also investigate aerosols, water vapour, and clouds in the atmosphere throughout the planet.
It is tentatively scheduled to launch in 2025, with a 5-year lifespan.
Payloads And Parameters
The satellite will have two major payloads. The French space agency CNES will deliver the Thermal Infra-Red (TIR) payload, which will be a four-channel long-wavelength infrared image sensor for high-resolution surface temperature measurements. It will also map the amount of heat radiated back by land in various places.
ISRO is developing the Visible Near Infrared-Red Short Wave Infrared-Red (VNIR-SWIR) payload, which will map the earth's surface reflectance or albedo across seven bands. This will measure the amount of heat reflected off the earth's surface while also calculating various biophysical and radiation budget variables.
Expected Benefits Of This Mission
The project is expected to improve remote sensing technology, which monitors Earth from a distance in orbit. As high temperatures and weather events sweep the world, the satellite and the data it will deliver become increasingly important.
According to ISRO, the mission would solve major water and food security challenges by delivering crucial data that can be utilized to develop newer sustainable water policies among watershed managers, agro-industries, and the Indian farming community.
The satellite's infrared heat imaging is also quite high resolution, and it has a "high-repeat" imaging capability (presumably to image the same area multiple times), which would help improve understanding of the earth's natural processes and aid global climate change mitigation efforts.
ISRO also stated that the TRISHNA mission will address critical water and food security concerns, with a focus on the anthropogenic or human-caused effects of climate change.
