Description
Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan top the list of 1.16 lakh farmers who have deliberately opted out of the yearly Rs 6,000 Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) plan from June 2023 to May 2024. Last year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare added a feature to the PM-Kisan mobile app and website that allows farmers to opt out of the system on their own.
About The PM-KISAN Benefit Scheme
Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAmman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is a Central Sector Scheme funded entirely by the Government of India. Launched in 2019, the Scheme first provided financial support to all Small and Marginal Farmers' families across the country who owned cultivable land of up to 2 hectares. Its scope was later broadened to include all farmer families in the country, regardless of amount of land holdings.
Under the Scheme, an amount of Rs. 6000/- per year is sent directly into farmers' bank accounts in three four-monthly installments of Rs. 2000/-, subject to specific exclusion criteria based on higher income status.
Aim Of This Strategy
- To increase farmers' incomes by providing income support to all landholding farmer families across the country.
Person Excluded From The Scheme
Institutional landowners, farmer families possessing constitutional positions.
Officers and employees of state and national governments, as well as PSUs and government autonomous entities, who are currently serving or have retired.
Professionals such as doctors, engineers, and lawyers, as well as retired pensioners with monthly pensions exceeding Rs 10,000, and those who paid income tax in the previous assessment year.
How The Beneficiaries Are Identification Of The Recipients?
The task for identifying eligible beneficiary farmers and uploading their data to the PM-KISAN site falls exclusively on the state governments.
Over 1 lakh farmers willingly gave up their PM-Kisan benefits last year (2023).
