Description

The "None of the Above" (NOTA) option finished second in Madhya Pradesh's Indore seat, receiving a record-breaking 2,18,674 votes, the highest recorded total.

About NOTA (None of the Above)

  • It is a voting option on the ballot that allows voters to express their displeasure of all competing candidates without selecting any of them.

  • NOTA allows voters to express their negative sentiments and lack of support for the candidates.

  • It allows them to refuse while keeping their decision private.

When Was It First Used?

  • NOTA was initially utilized in the 2013 Assembly elections in five states (Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh), followed by the 2014 General Elections.

  • It was incorporated into the electoral process following the Supreme Court's 2013 directive in the PUCL v. Union of India case.

Does The NOTA Vote Count?

  • The Election Commission explained that votes cast as NOTA are counted but are deemed 'invalid votes'.

  • Even if NOTA votes receive the most votes in a constituency, the candidate with the second highest number of votes is proclaimed the winner.

  • As a result, votes cast in favor of NOTA have no effect on election results.

  • Current Petition: The Supreme Court is reviewing a petition to establish standards for declaring elections "null and void" if NOTA receives the most votes in a constituency.
