Wipro 3D and ISRO collaborated to build and successfully test a 3D-printed rocket engine for India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), marking a watershed moment in sustainable space exploration. The engine, intended for the fourth stage (PS4), represents a significant step forward in additive manufacturing technology for India's space program.
Design Innovation And Benefits
ISRO used Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) technology to rework the traditionally built PS4 engine. Laser Powder Bed Fusion reduced the number of engine components from 14 to a single piece, removing 19 weld joints. This streamlined design significantly lowered raw material consumption and production time, boosting efficiency and effectiveness.
Development And Testing
ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre created the PS4 engine, which uses a bipropellant mixture of nitrogen tetroxide and monomethyl hydrazine. Wipro 3D, the Indian industrial partner, carried out the additive manufacturing technique. The engine's performance parameters were validated through comprehensive testing, which included extensive flow and thermal modeling, structural simulations, and several hot tests.
Rigorous Testing Validates Performance
Prior to the successful 665-second hot test, ISRO carried out intensive developmental testing, including four hot tests of the integrated engine. These extensive studies confirmed the engine's performance and reliability under a variety of situations, indicating its suitability for operational deployment.
