Description

In a world-first, Japanese researchers created a miniature wooden spacecraft called LignoSat, which will be sent into space in September.

About Lignosat

  • LignoSat is a merger of "ligno" (the Latin word for wood) and "satellite".

  • It is the result of collaborative research and development by members of Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry Co.

  • Their goal is to use the eco-friendliness and cost-effectiveness of wood in space exploration.

  • It is made of magnolia wood, which is known for its durability and versatility.

Reason For Useing Wood

  • Wooden satellites are considered more environmentally benign as they reenter the Earth's atmosphere at the end of their mission. Unlike metal satellites, which cause air pollution through the creation of metal particles during reentry, wooden satellites alleviate these concerns.

  • It will first go to the International Space Station (ISS) on a SpaceX rocket launched from the Kennedy Space Center.

  • When it arrives at the ISS, it will be released from the Japanese experiment module to evaluate its durability and strength.

  • Researchers will receive data from the satellite to monitor its function, including indicators of strain and its ability to endure temperature extremes.
