According to a new study conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, more people living in cities are making nights substantially warmer in over 140 major Indian cities. A research comparing these metropolitan areas to their non-urban counterparts discovered that temperatures soared 60% higher at night in cities. This was primarily due to the urban heat island (UHI) effect. The temperature increased the greatest in major cities such as Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Rajkot. Other cities, like as Delhi-NCR and Pune, also experienced significant shifts.
Understanding The Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effect
The UHI effect occurs when buildings in cities, particularly those composed of concrete and asphalt, absorb and store heat during the day and gradually release it at night, making nights warmer. According to new research, this release of heat not only elevates nighttime temperatures, but it also alters the environment generally by affecting things like rain pattern and pollution levels.
The Impact Of Urbanisation On Local Climate
The study's major purpose was to investigate how urbanization has affected temperature, particularly during the last twenty years (2000-2020). The average rise due to urbanization was roughly 0.2 degrees Celsius every decade, implying that urbanization accounts for approximately 37.73 percent of total urban heat. This in-depth study discovered that cities warmed up about twice as quickly as the rest of the country.
Differential Regional Impact
Cities in India's northwest, northeast, and south experienced higher nighttime temperatures. However, urbanization has a greater impact on the country's eastern and central regions, which are rapidly growing. This heterogeneity between areas shows that urban planning and climate resilience strategies should be tailored to each area's specific demands and stage of development.
