About Campi Flegrei
Campi Flegrei (Phlegrean Fields in English) is an active volcanic area in Naples, Italy.
Unlike nearby Mount Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei lacks a single volcano.
It is more of a volcanic system, with numerous centers located within a caldera (the depression caused by emptying magma chambers causes a volcano's roof to fall).
The Campi Flegrei caldera has a diameter of 12-15 kilometers (7.5-9.3 miles).
It developed 39,000 years ago when an eruption emptied it of magma. According to a recent theory, this eruption may have marked the beginning of the end of the Neanderthals.
One-third of it is submerged in the Tyrrhenian Sea, which separates the Italian mainland from Sardinia.
This is Europe's largest active caldera. It is far larger than the cone-shaped Vesuvius, which destroyed the ancient Roman city of Pompeii in AD79, and far more active.
Campi Flegrei has been in turmoil since 1950. It is the result of a phenomena known as bradyseism, which scientists define as the progressive displacement of a portion of the Earth's surface produced by the filling or emptying of an underground magma chamber or hydrothermal activity.
It last erupted in 1538, after around 3000 years. This eruption, however modest in contrast, created Monte Nuovo, a new mountain.
Campi Flegrei is classified as a supervolcano by scientists, with eruptions capable of causing global consequences.
