Description
GAIL (India) Ltd., the country's biggest natural gas transmission and distribution operator, has reached a critical milestone by commissioning its first green hydrogen facility. This plant, located in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, is GAIL's first step into new and alternate energy sources.
Government Recognition And Support
Pankaj Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, attended the inauguration ceremony, demonstrating the government's support and acknowledgment for this pioneering effort.
Plant Specification And Capacity
This unique Green Hydrogen plant has an incredible capacity to produce 4.3 tons of hydrogen per day (TPD). This is accomplished through the use of 10 Megawatt (MW) PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) Electrolyzer units that use the process of electrolysis of water fueled by renewable energy sources.
Initial Applications And Internal Consumption
Initially, the hydrogen produced by this facility would be used as a fuel alongside natural gas for internal consumption in various processes and equipment at the current Vijaipur plant.
Renewable Power Integration And Solar Infrastructure
To address the green power requirements of the 10 MW PEM Electrolyzer, GAIL is currently installing around 20 MW of solar power plants in Vijaipur. This applies to both ground-mounted and floating solar units. Furthermore, GAIL is utilizing renewable energy through open access, bolstering its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Future Collaboration Efforts And Sustainable Solutions
GAIL is conducting collaborative studies with Engineers India Limited and IIT Kanpur to investigate the feasibility of mixing hydrogen with natural gas. This effort demonstrates GAIL's commitment to researching and developing sustainable energy solutions for the future.
GAIL has taken a huge step toward embracing renewable energy and lowering its carbon footprint by putting India's first green hydrogen plant online. This pioneering project not only corresponds with the country's aim of obtaining energy independence, but it also illustrates GAIL's dedication to environmental sustainability and innovation.
