Dipa Karmakar, an Indian gymnast, made history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at any Asian Championships. Dipa, from Tripura, accomplished this astounding achievement in the women's vault individual final at the Asian Women's Artistic Gymnastics Championships 2024, which took place on May 26, 2024, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Dipa delivered an outstanding performance, averaging 13.566 points to win the coveted gold medal. Kim Son-hyang and Jo Kyong-byol, both from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), won silver and bronze medals, respectively, with scores of 13.466 and 12.966 points.

Despite her impressive performance, Dipa narrowly missed out on a quota for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, finishing 16th in the all-around category.

About Dipa Karmakar

  • Dipa Karmakar is one of India's most known and inspiring female gymnasts, standing only 4 feet 11 inches tall and hailing from Tripura.

  • She won her first international medal, a bronze, at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

  • Dipa became the first Indian female gymnast to qualify for the Summer Olympics, competing in the vault event and finishing fourth.

  • In 2018, she became the first Indian to win a gold medal at a worldwide gymnastics competition, winning the FIG World Cup in Mersin, Turkey.

  • Dipa also won a bronze medal at the 2018 Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Germany.

Awards & Recognition

  • Dipa Karmakar was awarded India's highest sporting distinction, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (formerly Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award), in 2016.

  • In 2017, she received India's fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, for her extraordinary efforts.
