About The Periyar River
- It is the longest river in Kerala.
Course
It rises in Tamil Nadu's Western Ghats and runs north to the Periyar National Park, where it empties into the Periyar Lake, a man-made reservoir constructed in 1895.
The water from here flows into the Vembanad Lake and, eventually, into the Arabian Sea.
A tunnel carries water from the Periyar Lake east through the Himalayas to the Vaigai River in Tamil Nadu, where it is used for irrigation.
It is also known as the 'Lifeline of Kerala' because of its significant economic contribution to the state.
Idukki Dam on the Periyar is Kerala's largest dam and hydroelectric project. It is also one of the tallest arch dams in Asia.
Other dams built along the river include Neriyamangalam, Pallivasal, Panniyar, Kundalam, Chenkulam, and Mullaperiyar.
Sankaracharya, the greatest Advaita philosopher, was born in Kalady, on the banks of the Periyar.
Periyar's primary tributaries include the Muthirapuzha River, Mullayar River, Cheruthoni River, Perinjankutti River, and Edamala River.
