France has reached a key milestone in its defense capabilities by successfully testing the modified ASMPA supersonic missile, which can carry a nuclear payload.

About The ASMPA Missile

• The Air-Sol Medium Range (ASMP/ASMP-A) is an air-launched supersonic cruise missile with a nuclear payload. It is a key component of France's nuclear deterrence.

• ASMP-A, an enhanced variant of the ASMP, entered French service in 2009. This version had a range of up to 500 kilometers and could carry a new 300 kt thermonuclear warhead. 

• The ASMPA-R project is a revamped version of the AMSPA designed to increase range and support further advancements in its warhead. 

Features

• It is an inertial-guided air-to-surface missile that is most likely controlled by terrain mapping and a pre-programmed onboard computer. 

• The motor assembly consists of a solid-propellant engine that launches after the missile is freed from the aircraft.

• After ignition, the missile accelerates to Mach 2.0 in five seconds, and the booster cartridge is released from the ramjet exhaust nozzle.

• The liquid (kerosene)-powered ramjet motor takes over and accelerates to Mach 3.0, depending on altitude.
