Description

The United Nations General Assembly designated May 24 as International Day of the Markhor. This resolution, sponsored by Pakistan and eight other nations, seeks to increase awareness and promote the conservation of this iconic and ecologically valuable species that lives in Central and South Asia's mountainous regions.

The markhor (Capra falconeri), or "screw-horned goat," is Pakistan's national animal. It is a beautiful wild goat notable for its stunning spiral-shaped horns, which can reach 1.6 meters (5.2 feet) in length, making them the longest horns of any surviving caprid species.

Threatened But Recovering

The markhor population, once thought to be on the verge of extinction, has progressively increased, doubling in a matter of decades, with a significant surge since 2014. According to Saeed Abbas, a representative of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Pakistan, "The population of the Markhor has been increasing with an annual ratio of 2% since 2014."

The markhor population is currently believed to be between 3,500 and 5,000 people, with the majority living in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) region, followed by Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan.

Despite this improving tendency, the markhor is still listed as "near threatened" on the IUCN Red List of endangered Species and has been included in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) since 1992.

Ecological And Economic Significance

The UN General Assembly resolution emphasizes the markhor's ecological value and role in the larger ecosystem. It also acknowledges the potential to boost area economies, encourage conservation initiatives, and promote long-term tourism and economic growth by preserving the markhor and its natural habitat.

The markhor is not only important for the environment, but it also helps the local economy. Conservation efforts to preserve this species and its habitat will benefit the entire ecosystem, boosting regional economies and encouraging sustainable development.

Celebrating Conservation Efforts

The International Day of the Markhor commemorates the conservation efforts made by different stakeholders, including governments, non-governmental organizations, and local people, to safeguard this iconic species and its natural environment.

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has been invited to help with the commemoration of this day, encouraging global participation and collaboration in support of markhor conservation efforts.

As we commemorate the first International Day of the Markhor on May 24, 2024, let us reconfirm our commitment to protecting this gorgeous species and its natural environment, assuring a sustainable future for future generations.
