Description
The number of public wifi hotspots under the Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) plan in the country is approaching two lakh.
About The PM-WANI Scheme
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) launched it in December 2020 to give affordable, high-speed internet access to the public in rural and isolated locations around the country.
The scheme aims to create a public Wi-Fi network across the country by establishing Wi-Fi Access Points (WAPs) at public data offices (PDOs).
The WAPs will run on an open-architecture system, allowing numerous service providers to offer their services to the public via a unified platform.
PM-WANI Ecosystem- It is made up of four parts: Public Data Office (PDO), Public Data Office Aggregator (PDOA), App Provider, and Central Registry.
PDO sets up Wi-Fi hotspots and provides internet connectivity to users. PDOs will not need a license from the Department of Tele-communication to provide broadband internet over these public Wi-Fi networks.
PDOA authorizes and accounts for PDOs. PDOA provides a user interface for users to purchase a plan and monitor their data consumption. PDOA does not have to pay any license costs.
Small merchants can become PDOs as last-mile access service providers, with PDOAs providing Internet and backend services.
App Provider will provide an application to register users, 'find' and display PM-WANI Wi-Fi hotspots nearby for internet access, and authenticate potential broadband customers. Startups and wallet providers may become App Providers.
The Centre for Development of Telematics oversees the central registration, which stores information about App Providers, PDOs, and PDOAs.
How Can You Get On The PM-WANI Internet?
To access public hotspots through the PM-WANI program, download an appropriate app that displays accessible networks.
The user can then select from a list of available connections and pay for use of the network.
The user can use the network till his or her balance is depleted.
