Shrinivas R. Kulkarni, an astronomy professor with Indian heritage who now lives in the United States, has been awarded the renowned Shaw Prize in Astronomy for 2024. He is renowned for being one of the first to investigate millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other changing celestial occurrences.

In 2002, Hong Kong philanthropist Run Run Shaw established the Shaw Prize, an international honor. This prize recognizes outstanding achievements in Astronomy, Life Science and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences. All three of these prizes are awarded annually and each is valued USD 1.2 million.

Shrinivas R. Kulkarni's most significant accomplishment was leading the development of the Palomar Transient Factory and its successor, the Zwicky Transient Facility. These programs have advanced our understanding of the time-varying optical sky significantly by monitoring how many star occurrences change over time.
Educational Background And Career
The Indian Institute of Technology awarded Kulkarni his Master's degree in 1978. The next year, he earned a PhD from the University of California. He was the head of Caltech Optical Observatories from 2006 to 2018 and is the George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Science at Caltech.

Run Run Shaw, a businessman and philanthropist from Hong Kong, founded one of the city's largest film production firms. He was born in Ningbo, China, in 1907, and was a major contributor in popularizing kung fu films such as "The One Armed Swordsman" around the world. Shaw also established TVB (broadcasting Broadcasting Limited) in 1967, which had a significant impact on Asian broadcasting. He donated almost $1 billion to medical and educational institutions around the world. Shaw was knighted in 1977 and died in 2014, at the age of 106.
