Hepatitis A has spread rapidly in Kerala's Malappuram district, with an estimated 8,000 cases and 12 deaths. The highly contagious virus typically affects children under the age of 15, but it is now spreading to older people whose immune systems are weakened.

Hepatitis A is a liver ailment caused by a highly contagious virus.
Infected people may experience symptoms such as jaundice, fever, and stomach ache.
Symptoms often occur within two to six weeks of getting the virus.
In 99% of instances, the infection resolves itself and causes no permanent damage to the liver.
Severe results, such as liver failure or death, are rare.
Transmission Of The Virus
Hepatitis is primarily transmitted by A virus spreads from feces to the mouth via contaminated food or water. It can be found in an infected person's stool before they exhibit any symptoms, and it can also be identified after symptoms have subsided. Previous occurrences, such as those in Delhi and Kanpur, were caused by broken sewer pipes that allowed unclean water into the water system.
Symptoms And Diagnosis
Symptom- Common indicators include feeling nauseous, having a strange color pee, and experiencing stomach pain. In severe circumstances, it might cause fatigue, loss of consciousness, and bleeding.
Diagnosis- In this scenario, medical tests such as the Prothrombin Time (PT) test are critical for determining how well the liver is functioning and what type of care is best, which may include remaining in the hospital and being monitored or receiving a liver transplant.
Prevention From Hepatitis A
Getting vaccinated against Hepatitis A is the greatest approach to avoid contracting it. This vaccination is available either alone or in combination with the Hepatitis B vaccine. Hygiene behaviors such as cleaning your hands thoroughly, being cautious when preparing meals, and boiling water are critical for preventing viral transmission. Portable water filters, such as RO systems, are effective at removing many impurities, but they cannot remove viruses. Boiling water is the greatest approach to get clean water. To prevent the spread of Hepatitis A, especially in regions where it is already prevalent, people should keep themselves clean and avoid potentially contaminated items such as street food or water sources they do not trust.
