The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Delhi) has launched its third batch of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) mentorship programs aimed at high school girls in Classes 9 and 11.
This year, nearly 200 nomination applications were received from Delhi government schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas (in the Delhi-NCR region), and private schools. The third batch consists of 100 candidates.
The STEM Mentorship Program will be divided into three thorough sections. A 9-day program will be held during the "summer phase" (May 14–May 24). Participants will be immersed in STEM areas with expert lectures, laboratory demonstrations, and hands-on problem-solving workshops. Additionally, a Maker Space program at IIT Delhi will give students hands-on experience with DIY projects.
Participants in the ensuing "At the school" phase will attend the Sci-Tech Spins lecture series, which will be presented monthly on Saturdays from July to November 2024. The interactions with IIT Delhi students will enhance their learning experience.
The program will culminate in the "winter phase" in January 2025, with lectures on STEM leadership, entrepreneurship, and meetings with successful IIT Delhi graduates.
The first cohort of ten girls was launched in December 2021, with the "successful completion" of the second batch of 32 schoolgirls in June 2023, all under the auspices of IIT Delhi's Office of Academic Outreach and New Initiatives.
Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, began the third part of this mentorship journey, which is aimed to inspire and empower young minds to pursue professions in STEM subjects. The mentorship program aims to provide a fostering atmosphere for emerging talent.
“We are keen to enhance gender balance in our institute. This workshop provides an opportunity for women students to explore opportunities in STEM and make informed career choices based on their interests and passion”, said, IIT Delhi, Professor Rangan Banerjee.
