Description
A team of naturalists has reported a new spider species dubbed 'Ligdus Garvale' from Garvale, a village in the Somwarpet taluk of the Kodagu district, Karnataka.
About Ligdus Garvale
It's a new species of jumping spider. It is only the second reported case of the Ligdus genus in 129 years.
It was discovered in Garvale village, Kodagu district, Karnataka, which is bordered by agroforestry, including coffee plantations, pepper, and paddy fields.
It was discovered under the leaf of a torch ginger plant and resembles Pseudoscorpions.
Because of its nature as a high canopy jumper, it frequently goes unseen and builds a double-layered web for shelter.
About Jumping Spiders
Jumping spiders are the largest spider family, with about 6,380 species (Salticidae). They're famed for their ability to jump and pounce on their victim.
They are most prevalent in the tropics, although they can also be found in the north and even the Arctic.
Features
Although a few species have hairy bodies, the majority have few hairs (setae).
The body is frequently brilliantly coloured or intricately patterned.
They have excellent eyesight. These arachnids always have four pairs of eyes, including the massive, forward-facing primary pair.
They are diurnal, and the majority of jumping spiders are solitary.
