Meghalaya made history by appointing Idashisha Nongrang as the state's first female Director General of Police. Nongrang, a 1992 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, would succeed Lajja Ram Bishnoi, who is scheduled to retire on May 19, 2024.

A Khasi Community Trailblazer

Nongrang's appointment is notable culturally because he belongs to the Khasi community, one of Meghalaya's three matrilineal ethnic tribes. The Khasis, like the Garos and Jaintias, practice a matrilineal system in which descent and inheritance are traced back through the mother's lineage.

Nongrang, the current Director General of Meghalaya Civil Defence, has demonstrated remarkable leadership throughout her career. She previously served as acting DGP in 2021, indicating her readiness for this pivotal role.

Nongrang's appointment as the state's police chief received widespread support from three main political parties: the United Democratic Party, the Voice of the People Party, and the Bharatiya Janata Party's State Unit. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recommended Nongrang, Ram Prasad Meena (ADG, Border Security Force), and Deepak Kumar (ADG, Central Reserve Police Force) for the coveted position.
