National Technology Day in India began in 1998, when the Indian Army conducted five nuclear bomb tests (Pokhran-II) in Rajasthan under the watchful eye of India's then-Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Pokhran - II was led by India's Missile Man, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Following the spectacular success of the Pokhran Test, India became the sixth nuclear country.
To commemorate India's achievements in nuclear research, Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared May 11 National Technology Day. The first National Technology Day was commemorated on May 11, 1999. The Pokhran nuclear experiments marked an important milestone in India's efforts to progress technology and set the way for future breakthroughs in the sector.
