Description

The National Archives of India (NAI) has received a valuable collection of private papers and genuine correspondences from the late Shri Rafi Ahmad Kidwai, a key actor in India's freedom movement and nation-building efforts. This acquisition secures the preservation of an important element of our country's history, as well as the legacy of a magnificent leader.

A Treasure Trove Of Historical Correspondences

The collection includes authentic correspondences between Shri Kidwai and other prominent personalities, like as Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, and P.D. Tandon. These significant records provide insights into these leaders' views, strategies, and coordinated efforts throughout the key period of India's independence campaign.

Guardians Of National Heritage

As the custodian of the Government of India's non-current records, the NAI holds these historical documents in trust for the benefit of administrators, researchers, and the general public, in accordance with the requirements of the Public Records Act 1993. The acquisition of Shri Kidwai's private papers adds to the NAI's wide collection of documents from notable Indians in various fields who have made major contributions to the nation.

Rafi Ahmad Kidwai: A Life Dedicated To India

Shri Rafi Ahmad Kidwai was born on February 18, 1894, in Masauli, Uttar Pradesh, into a zamindar family of middle class status. His political career began in 1920 with his participation in the Khilafat and Non-Cooperation Movements, which led to his imprisonment.

Kidwai worked as Motilal Nehru's Private Secretary and held important positions in the Congress Legislative Assembly and the United Provinces Congress Committee.

After independence, Kidwai became India's first Minister of Communications in Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet, initiating innovations such as the "own your telephone" service and night air mail. Later, he took over the Food and Agriculture ministry, successfully addressing food rationing difficulties with his administrative talents.

A Legacy Of Innovation And Dedication

Kidwai's commitment to freeing India and developing the country was unwavering throughout his political career. In 1956, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research established the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award to recognize his accomplishments.

As Communication Minister, Kidwai was known for his ingenuity and efficacy, while his leadership in the Food Ministry was lauded as a triumph against hardship, giving him the nicknames "magician" and "miracle man."

Rafi Ahmed Kidwai exemplified action and determination during his pursuit of Indian independence and later in his administration duties. His ability to quickly solve situations and create innovative solutions demonstrates his exceptional leadership abilities. His contributions to several industries, including communications and agriculture, had a long-term impact on the country's prosperity.
