Description

Scientists at Sweden's Linköping University recently achieved a huge scientific achievement by constructing the first free-standing sheet of gold that is only one atom thick. This 2D sheet, known as "goldene," is akin to graphene and represents the first time a metal has been converted into a 2D sheet.

Production Process

To synthesize goldene, scientists sandwiched a silicon atomic layer between layers of titanium carbide. Gold was subsequently put on the structure, causing gold atoms to replace silicon atoms. Finally, the titanium carbide layers were removed via a chemical technique, leaving an incredibly thin, free-standing layer of gold.

Potential Benefits

  • Electronics Industry Gold is commonly utilized in the electronics industry due to its high electrical conductivity. The invention of goldene could transform this business by drastically lowering the quantity of gold required in gadgets.

  • Energy-efficient Catalysis Goldene could also be employed in energy-saving catalytic processes such CO2 conversion, hydrogen synthesis, and water purification.

Future Research

Scientists are currently investigating the prospect of producing 2D sheets of other metals, such as iridium and platinum, using the same technique. If successful, this might spark an unprecedented revolution in material engineering.
