Description
Sunita Williams, an Indian-origin astronaut, and colleague Butch Wilmore are on their third space mission to the International Space Station (ISS). This mission is the Starliner spacecraft's first crewed voyage, designed to test its systems from launch to landing.
Launch Details
The launch is slated for May 7 at 8:04 am IST, aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft atop an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral. After docking, the astronauts will spend around a week on the ISS.
Significance Of The Mission
NASA considers this launch a critical milestone because the mission's success is critical to the astronauts' safety. Following two unmanned orbital flight tests, this will be Starliner's first crewed journey and third orbital flight.
Williams: Background And Achievements
Williams, a former US Navy officer, was chosen as an astronaut by NASA in 1998. She holds the record for the most overall cumulative spacewalk time by a female astronaut, having spent 322 days in space over the course of her two previous missions.

During her previous flights, Williams set records for the most spacewalks by a female astronaut and carried out critical repairs and maintenance aboard the ISS. She is a pioneer in space exploration, making substantial contributions to scientific inquiry and progress.

Williams was born in Euclid, Ohio, to Indian-American neuroanatomist Deepak Pandya and Slovene-American Ursuline Bonnie (Zalokar) Pandya. She has degrees in physical science and engineering management. Her achievements have inspired both her own country and the international society.
