Description
The Indian Navy has launched a modernisation effort to improve the life, maintenance support, and capability of its warships by switching their propulsion systems from steam to diesel. On 16 October 2023, the Ministry of Defence signed a Rs. 313.42 crore contract with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) to begin the mid-life upgrade and re-powering of INS Beas, the first of the Brahmaputra-class frigates to undergo this transformation.
INS Beas Is The Flagship Of The Conversion Project
The conversion of INS Beas began in early April 2024 and is projected to take over two years to complete. Once the refit is completed in 2026, INS Beas will rejoin the Indian Navy's active fleet with a modernized weapon suite and improved combat capability. The project's successful completion will open the way for the conversion of the remaining Brahmaputra-class ships, INS Brahmaputra and INS Betwa, from steam to diesel propulsion.
Benefits Of Diesel Propulsion
The change from steam to diesel propulsion is projected to greatly extend the warship's life. INS Beas, for example, which would have been retired in 10 to 12 years, is likely to remain operational for more than 20 years following conversion. Diesel-powered ships are easier to maintain and provide better working conditions for the crew since they avoid concerns like steam leaks and high temperatures in the boiler and engine rooms that are common with outdated steam propulsion systems.
Indigenous Development Of Marine Diesel Engines
As part of its modernisation effort, the Indian Navy is also working on indigenous development of marine diesel engines under the Make-I category. Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) have taken on this project, and if successful, orders for 30 diesel engines are expected. These engines will be installed on next-generation corvettes and other naval vessels, enhancing the Indian Navy's capabilities and encouraging self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing.
