Description
India underlines its dedication to protecting Antarctica's fragile ecosystem and encouraging scientific research in the region. The 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM 46) and the 26th Meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP 26) will be held in Kochi, Kerala, from May 20 to 30, 2024, by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) of the Government of India, in collaboration with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research.
Antarctic Treaty
The Antarctic Treaty, signed in 1959 and enforced in 1961, identifies Antarctica as a zone of peace, scientific collaboration, and environmental protection. Over 56 countries have ratified the Treaty, indicating broad support for its ideas.
Committee On Environmental Protection (CEP)
The CEP, which was established under the Madrid Protocol in 1991, advises the ATCM on Antarctic environmental conservation and protection issues. India, a Consultative Party since 1983, actively participates in the decision-making process alongside 28 other Consultative Parties.
India's Participation
India's participation in the ATCM demonstrates its commitment to Antarctic concerns. India conducts crucial scientific expeditions in Antarctica from two year-round research sites, Maitri (1989) and Bharati (2012).

ATCM 46 and CEP 26 will meet in Kochi, Kerala, to discuss concerns in Antarctica and promote collaboration on environmental preservation and scientific research.
