JNU Will Accept NET Scores Instead Of NTA Entrance Test For PhD Programs

Description

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced that the National Eligibility Test (NET) score will be accepted as the selection parameter for admission to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs beginning with the current academic year, rather than the National Testing Agency's (NTA) entrance test.

As part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, UGC has decided, in a Public Notice dated March 27, 2024, that the score of the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC and CSIR can be used by Universities/HEIs for PhD Admission in place of an entrance test, according to a notice released by JNU on April 27.

Following this direction, JNU has decided to adopt NET scores for PhD admissions, thus replacing the entrance exam previously administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

"Accordingly, JNU has decided to use NET score in place of the entrance test conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to PhD Programmes in the University from the academic session 2024-25," the notice added.

Following a protest by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) at the University Grants Commission (UGC) headquarters, the Joint Secretary of UGC met with the JNUSU office bearers.

The JNUSU stated that the arbitrary decision to replace PhD Entrance Exams with NET results will further alienate many students, particularly those from marginalised groups, from research, and will force them to leave universities.

The UGC Joint Secretary responded that they would have an internal discussion on these issues. It was also stated that universities have the autonomy to run their own entrance exams.

The JNUSU will meet with the Director of Admissions on April 29 to demand that the PhD admission exam for this year and all future years be administered by JNUEE.
