Description
The Voyager 1 probe is sending useful data to ground control, NASA reported recently.
About The Voyager 1 Spacecraft
It is a space probe launched by NASA on September 5, 1977, almost two weeks after its twin, Voyager 2, to research the outer Solar System and beyond.
The mission has included flybys of Jupiter and Saturn to explore their moons, rings, and magnetic fields.
It is now the furthest human-made object from Earth. It was the first spacecraft to breach the heliosphere, the threshold where external forces outweigh those from our Sun.
It detected a small ring around Jupiter and two new Jovian moons, Thebe and Metis. Voyager 1 discovered five new moons on Saturn as well as a new ring known as the G-ring.
Voyager 1 carries a golden record with sounds and images chosen to represent the diversity of life and culture on Earth, in the event that extraterrestrial life encounters it.
According to NASA, Voyager 1 has enough fuel to power its instruments until at least 2025. By then, the spacecraft will be around 13.8 billion miles (22.1 billion kilometers) from the sun.
Key Facts Regarding The Voyager 2 Spacecraft
NASA launched the space probe on August 20, 1977. It is part of the Voyager program, with Voyager 1.
The primary aim is to examine our solar system's outer planets and moons before embarking on an interstellar voyage.
It's the second spacecraft to reach interstellar space. It also has a golden record, similar to Voyager 1.
Firsts
It is the only spacecraft that has studied all four of the solar system's major planets up close.
It discovered the 14th moon of Jupiter.
It was the first man-made object to travel past Uranus.
At Uranus, Voyager 2 discovered ten new moons and two new rings.
It was the first human-made object to fly past Neptune.
At Neptune, Voyager 2 discovered five moons, four rings, and a "Great Dark Spot."
