In a landmark accomplishment, two renowned items from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, have received the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) classification. On April 16, 2024, the GI Registry Office in Chennai announced that the Tiranga Barfi of Varanasi and the Dhalua Murti Metal Casting Craft had been accepted into the elite GI category.
Uttar Pradesh's GI Product Tally Reached 75
This recent addition has cemented Uttar Pradesh's reputation as a leader in the GI sector. Tiranga Barfi and Dhalua Murti Metal Casting Craft have increased the state's total number of GI products to 75, including 58 handicrafts and 17 agricultural and food products. This astounding performance establishes a new record for the most GI tags associated with a single state in India.
The Iconic Tiranga Barfi
The Tiranga Barfi is deeply ingrained in the history of India's independence movement and retains a unique place in the hearts of Varanasi people. During the war for freedom, this tricolored sweetmeat was cleverly designed to promote secret meetings and information exchange among revolutionaries. The saffron color is generated from saffron, the green color comes from pistachio, and the white color is created with khoya and cashew nuts.
Varanasi's Dhalua Murti Metal Casting
The Dhalua Murti Metal Casting Craft, which originated in the Kashipura neighborhood of Varanasi, has acquired national renown for its detailed and magnificent metal idols. Craftsmen in this region have perfected the skill of casting idols of goddesses such as Maa Annapurna, Lakshmi-Ganesh, Durgaji, and Hanumanji, as well as numerous instruments, bells, thrones, and seals used in coin minting.
Varanasi’s GI Journey
Varanasi, also known as the "most diverse GI city," has seen a significant increase in the number of GI-registered items during the last nine years. Prior to 2014, only the Banaras Brocade & Sarees and the Bhadohi Handmade Carpets from the Varanasi region had the GI status. However, this figure has risen to an astonishing 34, demonstrating the region's rich cultural legacy and traditional craftsmanship.
With the technical assistance of the Human Welfare Association alone, a record 148 GI items have been registered across 14 states, demonstrating India's commitment to preserving and promoting its rich cultural heritage.
