Adani Green Energy Limited, an Adani Group company is developing the world's largest renewable energy park in Khavda, Gujarat's Kutch area. The park covers 538 square kilometers, which is approximately five times the total area of France's capital, Paris.
Khavda Plant Capacity
According to Adani Green Energy's Managing Director, Vineet Jain, the Khavda facility will have a total capacity of 30 GW.
Adani Group plans to invest Rs 1.5 lakh crore in this project.
This park now produces 2 GW of renewable energy, with an additional 4 GW capacity expected by March 2025.
After that, the capacity will be enhanced by 5 GW every year.
Khavda Park's Proximity To The Pakistani Border
Khavda Park is located barely one kilometer from Pakistan's international border.
Solar energy will account for 26 GW of the proposed 30 GW capacity, with wind energy accounting for 4%.
When the park is completely operational, it will create 81 billion units of electricity, enough to meet the whole demand of countries such as Belgium, Chile, and Switzerland.
Nodal Agency For The Hybrid Renewable Energy Park
The Hybrid Renewable Energy Park's nodal agency has been appointed as Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited.
The project to establish this park was developed as part of Prime Minister Modi's efforts to cut carbon emissions, and it has been underway since 2021.
Reasons For Locating The Hybrid Renewable Energy Park In Kutch
More than 1 lakh hectares of barren land are available near Khavda, on the India-Pakistan border in Gujarat's Kutch district.
The weather in this area is ideal for solar and wind energy generating.
The area is critical from a security standpoint, thus approval from the Defense Ministry was sought to build the park.
Challenges In Building The Hybrid Renewable Energy Park
Challenges include humid air, salty water, and salty soil, as well as security issues due to the park's proximity to the Pakistan border.
The lack of basic infrastructure, especially cell networks, makes it difficult to keep staff on the project.
There is a potential of Pakistani militants infiltrating the labor force.
Timeline For Completing The Hybrid Renewable Energy Park
50% of the work will be finished by December 2024, generating 14,000 MW of power.
The Hybrid Renewable Energy Park will be completely operational in December 2026, producing 30 GW of electricity.
