Description
The Indian Army has improved its Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) capabilities by acquiring Igla-S Man Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS) from Russia. This procurement, part of a bigger contract for 120 launchers and 400 missiles, represents a considerable upgrade from outmoded equipment.
Capabilities Of Igla-S
The Igla-S system, which consists of the 9M342 missile, 9P522 launching mechanism, 9V866-2 mobile test station, and 9F719-2 test set, provides a versatile and comprehensive air defence solution.
Russian Contracts And Indigenous Production
The purchase procedure began with an agreement inked with Russia in November of last year, with the first batch sourced directly from Russia. However, future production will be localized in India, in line with the country's goal of self-sufficiency in defense manufacture.
Deployment And Delivery
The Igla-S systems, designed for deployment in high mountainous terrain along the northern border, have already been delivered to one regiment, with more planned to equip subsequent formations.
Background And Selection Process
The selection of Igla-S followed a thorough procedure that began in 2010 under the previous government and culminated in the adoption of Russia's Rosoboronexport-manufactured system in 2018.
